About Heath
I became a counselor because I believe people are capable of more than their hardest moments. I've seen it — in the people I've worked with, in the groups I've facilitated, and in my own life.
I hold a Master of Arts in Counseling with a specialization in the Treatment of Trauma, Abuse and Deprivation from Ottawa University. My background includes working with court-involved individuals, substance abuse populations, and people navigating some of life's most difficult seasons. That experience has made me a better listener, a sharper clinician, and someone who genuinely doesn't scare easily — whatever you bring to the room.
My approach draws on Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), and a deep belief that every person has the capacity to find meaning — even in the middle of their hardest chapters.
Outside the office I'm a husband of over 26 years, a dad, and someone who finds peace in the Arizona desert — which is exactly why this practice is named what it is. The cactus thrives in conditions most things can't survive. So can you.
The Process
Starting counseling can feel uncertain. Here's exactly what the process looks like.
No pressure, no commitment. We spend 15 minutes getting to know each other, talking about what's brought you here, and answering any questions you have. It's a simple first step.
We take time to really understand your story — what's brought you to counseling, what you've tried, and what you're hoping for. There's no rush and no agenda beyond getting to know you.
Sessions are 50 minutes and typically weekly. We'll build a rhythm that works for your life — in person in Queen Creek or via telehealth from anywhere in Arizona.
Counseling isn't just talking — it's learning. Each session you'll gain insight AND practical skills you can use between appointments. Change happens inside the room and outside of it.
You set the pace. There's no pressure to share more than you're ready for. We work toward your goals, and we celebrate every step of progress — big and small.
Investment
Desert Cactus Counseling is a private pay practice. This means we don't bill insurance directly — which keeps your care completely confidential and every session fully focused on you.
A no-pressure call to make sure we're a good fit before you commit to anything.

Accepted Payments
I accept payment via cash, debit or credit card, HSA or FSA card, and contactless payments such as Apple Pay at the end of each session. For telehealth services, payment is accepted via Square Invoice. Payment is due at the time of service.
Out of Network Billing
Desert Cactus Counseling does not accept insurance at this time. However, if you receive Out of Network (OON) benefits from your insurance coverage, I can provide a superbill — an itemized receipt with the appropriate details — for you to request reimbursement from your insurance carrier if applicable.
A limited number of sliding scale spots may be available based on financial need. Please inquire during your free virtual consultation.
Good Faith Estimate Notice
You have the right to receive a “Good Faith Estimate” explaining how much your medical and mental health care will cost.
Under the law, health care providers need to give patients who don’t have insurance or who are not using insurance an estimate of the expected charges for medical services, including psychotherapy services.
You have the right to receive a Good Faith Estimate for the total expected cost of any non-emergency healthcare services, including psychotherapy services. You can ask your health care provider for a Good Faith Estimate before you schedule a service.
If you receive a bill that is at least $400 more than your Good Faith Estimate, you can dispute the bill. Make sure to save a copy or picture of your Good Faith Estimate.

It depends on your goals and situation. Some people find meaningful change in 8–12 sessions. Others benefit from longer ongoing work. We'll discuss this together and revisit as we go.
That's completely okay — many clients come with no prior counseling experience. We'll start at the beginning and build from there. There's no wrong way to show up.
Yes — research consistently shows telehealth counseling is just as effective as in-person for most concerns. It also offers more flexibility. We'll find what works best for you.
